Chicago Still & Box Alarm 12-13-11

Yesterday, Hank Sajovic captured some compelling images and provided a detailed account of a fire that broke out in Chicago. Here’s what happened according to his report: On December 13, 2011, companies from the 14th Battalion responded to a still alarm signaling a fire at 4018 West Cermak Road. Engine 38 was the first to arrive and found flames engulfing a two-story brick apartment building measuring 25 feet by 60 feet. Shortly after, Truck 32, as the second-due truck, arrived and moved to its assigned position at the rear of the building. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the back portion of the structure was heavily ablaze. The captain quickly informed the 14th Battalion about the situation and requested a Box alarm. Three separate fire lines were deployed to control the spreading flames. The building was reported to be vacant, and the origin of the fire appeared suspicious, prompting the Office of Fire Investigations to be called to the scene. Attached are several photos taken by Hank Sajovic during the incident. In one image, firefighters can be seen pulling a hose line off Engine 109, preparing to tackle the fire. Another photo shows Truck 48 positioning itself in front of the building, ready to ladder the structure. A third photograph highlights the intense flames erupting from the rear of the building, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Lastly, an additional shot captures Squad 2 utilizing a spare apparatus to assist in firefighting efforts. The response from the Chicago Fire Department was swift, but the fire posed significant challenges due to its rapid spread and the condition of the vacant building. It serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and investigation in preventing such incidents in the future.
