New Lenox is added to the site

I recently had the chance to explore the New Lenox Fire Protection District, located in MABAS Division 19. This district operates four fire stations, each equipped with a mix of career and contract firefighters. They maintain a robust fleet of emergency vehicles, including four ambulances, four engines, and one ladder truck. The ambulances are a blend of Horton and Medtec models, while the engines come from reputable manufacturers like Pierce and Sutphen. Interestingly, their ladder truck is also a Pierce model. One standout piece of equipment at New Lenox is Engine 1631, a 2009 Sutphen Shield Series engine. This particular vehicle caught my attention because it started its life as a demo unit at the Joliet Speedway before finding a permanent home with New Lenox. It’s always fascinating to see how some pieces of equipment find their way into service after unique beginnings. Another highlight at Station 1 is a 1993 Oshkosh TA-3000 ARFF (Airplane Rescue Fire Fighting) vehicle. This rig, originally from the Navy, can be deployed as either a tanker or a foam tender for large-scale industrial or over-the-road incidents. Its versatility makes it an invaluable asset within the MABAS system. New Lenox also acquired a 1971 Oshkosh/Pierce 75-foot Snorkel from the Hillsboro Fire Department. This classic piece of firefighting history has been lovingly preserved and continues to serve the community effectively. The transformation from its original home in Hillsboro to its current role in New Lenox is a testament to the durability and adaptability of these vehicles. Looking at these photos, you can really appreciate the effort put into maintaining such a diverse fleet. Each vehicle tells its own story, whether it’s the modern Sutphen engine or the vintage Oshkosh Snorkel. It’s clear that New Lenox takes pride in its resources and commitment to public safety. Reflecting on my visit, I’m struck by how much work goes into keeping these stations operational and how every piece of equipment plays a crucial role in protecting the community. It’s inspiring to see such dedication and teamwork in action, especially when you consider the challenges faced by fire departments today. New Lenox seems to have found a balance between tradition and innovation, ensuring they’re prepared for any situation that arises.
