On Sunday evening, Wheeling Fire Department responded to an automatic alarm and discovered smoke coming from an industrial facility located at 301 W. Hintz Road. Upon arrival, firefighters identified the source as a machine in the rear of the building. The incident was quickly managed with the help of nearby departments, including Prospect Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Glenview. Using a hand line and the building’s sprinkler system, the fire was extinguished within a short time.
A team from Wheeling Tower 42 accessed the roof to check for fire extension and assist with ventilation as smoke escaped through the overhead door. Meanwhile, Wheeling Engine 24, a Spartan/Crimson unit, was on its way to a Code 4 upgrade but was redirected to supply water to the sprinkler system. Another shot captured the same engine at the sprinkler connection, highlighting the critical role it played during the response.
Engine 42, operating as Engine 23, remained half a block away from the scene, standing by as a backup. Buffalo Grove Tower 25, also due on a Code 4, arrived at the rear of the building to provide additional support. Prospect Heights Engine 39, a custom-built Alexis unit on an American LaFrance Eagle chassis, was dispatched as automatic aid and assisted in the early stages of the incident.
To manage the heavy smoke, large fans were deployed at the receiving dock to pull smoke out of the factory. The coordinated effort between multiple departments ensured a swift and effective response. More photos from the scene can be viewed HERE.
