Wauconda Box Alarm 1-22-11

The Wauconda Fire Department, part of MABAS Division 4, responded to a single-family home fire shortly after 1:00 PM today at 1116 Madison Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire in the garage that had already spread to the main house and attic area. Due to the intensity of the fire, they upgraded the call to a MABAS Box Alarm, bringing in mutual aid from several surrounding departments. Fortunately, no one was home at the time, and while the garage suffered significant damage—including a collapsed roof and a destroyed vehicle—damage to the main structure was limited to the area directly behind the two-story garage. Firefighters from Lake Zurich, Lake Villa, Nunda, Barrington, Round Lake, Mundelein, Countryside, and Long Grove all assisted at the scene. Larry Shapiro arrived after the fire was under control and captured several images from the scene. Interestingly, there was no second floor above the garage, despite the large window visible in this Google Maps image. The window appeared to suggest a second level, but in reality, the area was left unfinished. Several gusset plates that held the lightweight roof trusses in place failed during the fire, contributing to the structural collapse in the garage area.
