New Lenox is added to the site

I recently had the chance to explore the facilities of the New Lenox Fire Protection District in MABAS Division 19. They’ve added all four of their fire stations to the district, which is quite impressive. The team there operates with a mix of career and contract personnel, managing four ambulances, four engines, and one ladder truck. Their ambulance fleet consists of both Horton and Medtec units, while their engines come from reputable manufacturers like Pierce and Sutphen. The ladder truck, naturally, is another Pierce model. One standout piece of equipment is Engine 1631, a 2009 Sutphen Shield Series that originally served as a demo unit at the Joliet Speedway before finding its new home in New Lenox. It’s always fascinating to see how these vehicles transition between different roles and departments. Another highlight is the 1993 Oshkosh TA-3000 ARFF (ex-Navy), which they can deploy as either a tanker or a foam tender. This versatile vehicle plays a crucial role when dealing with large-scale over-the-road tanker incidents or industrial fires. You’ll often find it being utilized across MABAS when needed. While visiting Station 1, I couldn’t help but notice their acquisition of a 1971 Oshkosh/Pierce 75’ snorkel from the Hillsboro Fire Department. It’s an older model, but still highly functional and adds character to their collection. The Hillsboro Fire Department originally used this 75-foot snorkel, and it now proudly stands at New Lenox, continuing its service under new ownership. The photos I took really capture the essence of these vehicles and their historical significance. From the classic lines of the 1971 Oshkosh snorkel to the modern efficiency of the Sutphen engine, each piece tells a story of firefighting evolution. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to document such an important part of the community’s safety infrastructure. Overall, the New Lenox Fire Protection District seems to have a well-rounded fleet, combining tradition with innovation. Their commitment to serving the community shines through in every detail of their operations.
