Industrial fire in Wheeling 12-19

Wheeling firefighters responded to an automatic alarm on Sunday evening and discovered smoke coming from an industrial facility located at 301 W. Hintz Road. Upon arrival, they found the source of the smoke to be a machine in the rear of the building. The fire was quickly contained with the help of units from Prospect Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Glenview. Firefighters used a hand line along with the building's sprinkler system to extinguish the flames efficiently. A Wheeling Tower 42 unit was deployed to the roof to check for any signs of fire extension and assist with ventilation as smoke escaped through the overhead door. Meanwhile, Engine 24, a Spartan/Crimson model, was en route for a Code 4 upgrade but was redirected to supply water to the sprinkler system. Another shot captured Engine 24 at the sprinkler connection, highlighting its critical role in the operation. Engine 42, operating as Engine 23, remained half a block away from the scene as the backup unit. Buffalo Grove’s Tower 25, also due on a Code 4, set up in the rear of the building to support the effort. Prospect Heights’ Engine 39, a custom-built Alexis unit on an American LaFrance Eagle chassis, arrived as automatic aid for the initial alarm. To manage the heavy smoke, large fans were placed at the receiving dock to pull smoke out of the factory, improving visibility and air quality for emergency responders. Additional photos from the incident can be viewed HERE, offering a detailed look at the coordinated response and the equipment involved.
