As I stood there in Buffalo Grove last night, surrounded by the vibrant pink fire engines and the supportive crowd, I couldn’t help but feel inspired. The Pink Heals Tour 2010 has truly touched many communities during its journey through Illinois. Starting in Rockford, then making a stop at the IAFC trade show in Chicago, followed by visits to Matteson and Naperville, the tour has now reached Buffalo Grove. Each of these locations has embraced the mission of the Pink Heals Tour with open arms.
Last evening, the three pink fire trucks—two EONE Hush engines and a Spartan FMC Sentinel—were joined by a Mount Prospect police car adorned with pink graphics and the Buffalo Grove IAFF Honor Guard. These vehicles, which previously served in Bangor, ME; Tyler, TX; and Henry, VA, now carry messages of hope and resilience. Each truck is covered with heartfelt notes from individuals whose lives have been deeply affected by cancer.
The Pink Heals Tour describes itself as the “Cares Enough to Wear Pink: Guardians of the Ribbon.†Their mission is simple yet profound: to drive pink fire trucks across the U.S., offering support to women fighting cancer while encouraging men to join the cause. This initiative began in Phoenix, Arizona, under the leadership of firefighter Dave Graybill. Their goal extends beyond national borders, aiming to spread awareness globally.
On October 25, 26, and 27, the tour invites everyone to wear something pink in solidarity with women battling cancer. Firefighter Steve Rusin from the Buffalo Grove Fire Department has been actively promoting the cause by selling pink and blue t-shirts to raise funds.
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department has been instrumental in organizing events alongside the tour. Families gathered to greet the pink fire trucks, creating a sense of unity and shared purpose. Images from the event show the trucks parked at the baseball field, surrounded by firefighters and police officers, all united in their efforts to support a worthy cause.
As someone who witnessed the tour firsthand, I can attest to the emotional impact it has on both participants and spectators alike. The Pink Heals Tour is more than just a convoy of brightly colored vehicles—it’s a beacon of hope for those fighting cancer and a call to action for everyone else to lend a helping hand.
