From the Prospect Heights Fire District:
We just received word about an incident involving a small fire at a residential property. According to reports, emergency services were dispatched to the address after receiving a call about a potential structure fire. By the time the fire companies arrived, dispatch had already updated them, stating that the fire appeared to be contained to the rear deck and had largely been extinguished. Further investigation revealed that the fire originated in a planter box located on the deck. Smoldering materials from the planter somehow fell onto the wooden deck surface, sparking a localized fire.
When crews arrived on scene, they quickly took action to ensure the situation was fully under control. They removed a damaged section of the deck, including some trim work, to prevent any further spread of flames. Firefighters also conducted a thorough overhaul process, washing down the affected area to ensure all embers were completely out. Thankfully, there didn’t appear to be any significant risk of the fire spreading to nearby structures.
Units on scene included Prospect Heights Engine 9, Tower 9, Battalion 9, and additional support vehicles such as Engine 39, Truck 900, Wheeling Engine 23, MP Tower 13, and MP Ambulance 14. Their swift response helped mitigate what could have become a much larger issue.
Attached are some photos taken by Drew Smith showing the aftermath of the fire. The first image captures one of the fire engines arriving at the scene near Rob Roy, while the second shows firefighters working to clean up and secure the area post-extinguishment. There’s also a CAD printout provided by the department, offering a detailed overview of the incident layout.
Overall, it seems like everyone involved did an excellent job managing this situation before it escalated. It serves as a good reminder of how quickly outdoor fires can start and why regular maintenance is so important for preventing these kinds of incidents.
