New fire station for Palatine

The Daily Herald reported on July 14th that work is set to begin next month on a brand-new fire station in Palatine. As part of this initiative, crews are anticipated to start excavation within the next 30 to 45 days at the location of the future satellite fire station, situated at 1215 N. Quentin Road, where it meets Echo Lane. Recently, the village council gave unanimous approval for a contract that caps the construction costs at $2.56 million. This figure includes subcontractor bids, a construction contingency, the construction manager’s fee, and bonding expenses. When factoring in additional costs such as planning, design, furnishings, and administration, the overall project is projected to reach approximately $2.98 million—just shy of the allocated $3 million budget. While there remains hope for financial assistance from the state, which has proposed a potential contribution of $575,000 via its capital plan, the village is proceeding cautiously and has prepared alternative funding strategies. “We're preparing for the possibility that we might not receive any aid,” explained Village Manager Reid Ottesen. “At this point, I'd say our chances are about 50-50.” To manage these costs effectively, Palatine plans to issue the first of two bond issues next month. These bonds aim to finance both the new fire station and the significantly larger $23 million police headquarters project. Ottesen noted that this phased approach was chosen because neither building is scheduled for completion until next year, making it unnecessary to borrow the entire amount upfront and incur unnecessary interest charges. This satellite fire station, which will cover an area of 8,700 square feet, underwent a redesign earlier this year to ensure it stays within budget. Although most of the changes were aesthetic, they also involved adjustments to accommodate fewer personnel, reducing the maximum number of firefighters from six to five. However, these savings could be partially offset if the village decides against waiving its requirement for automatic sprinklers in the non-combustible attic space. Once completed, the new station is expected to be operational by March or April. At that time, the existing Dundee Road station will close down, and the Masonic Lodge will occupy the vacated space. Fire department officials argue that this new facility is crucial for improving response times to areas in the western and northwestern parts of Palatine, which have historically been served by the Dundee Road station.
