This message comes from Steve Redick:
The string of dollar store fires just keeps going. This particular incident happened on September 12 near the intersection of Jackson and Kedzie. The construction materials used in the building were described as lightweight, and I think this same shopping center had a fire a few years back too. Accessing the scene was quite challenging due to its proximity to a major CTA bus depot and the Eisenhower Expressway, which caused significant traffic congestion. At the peak of the blaze, multiple units were deployed including TL 5, TL14, Squad 2, Engine 44’s deck gun, 661, the turret wagon, and the hose wagon.
Squad 2’s Snorkel got engulfed in a fireball when part of the roof collapsed, injuring the crew, though I believe it was not severe. The vehicle ended up immobilized. They tried using the winch from the pie-wagon component of Squad 2 to drag the Snorkel away from the structure—an operation that was quite fascinating to observe. The photo showing the reserve Snorkel alongside the newer TL 14 highlights the collaboration between the oldest and newest rigs in the fleet—it’s pretty cool. I was there, and it was a chaotic but fascinating situation to witness. Firefighters really put themselves in harm's way, and seeing how they worked together under pressure was impressive. There was so much activity, with different teams handling various aspects of the firefighting effort. It’s always a reminder of how essential these professionals are, especially in situations like this where access and conditions were less than ideal.
