Chicago 3-11 Alarm fire, 9-12-16 (more)

This is Steve Redick reporting live from the scene of yet another dollar store fire that broke out on September 12 at the intersection of Jackson and Kedzie. The structure involved was noted for its lightweight construction, and I recall a similar incident happening at the same mall several years back. Access to the area was challenging due to its proximity to a major CTA bus depot and the Eisenhower Expressway, which caused significant traffic congestion. At the peak of the firefighting efforts, we had multiple units deployed, including TL 5, TL14, Squad 2, Engine 44's deck gun, 661, the turret wagon, and the hose wagon all actively engaged. During the operation, Squad 2's Snorkel was unfortunately engulfed in flames when part of the roof collapsed. Although the injuries sustained by the crew were minor, it was still a harrowing experience. They attempted to move the Snorkel away from the burning building using the winch from the pie-wagon attached to Squad 2—a fascinating maneuver to witness. In one of the photos, you can see the reserve Snorkel alongside the newer TL 14, representing both the oldest and newest apparatus in the fleet working side by side—it’s quite a sight! The images and videos capturing these moments are available for viewing here. [Attached are various images showcasing different angles of the firefighting efforts, including the American LaFrance LTI tower ladder, E-ONE tower ladder, Seagrave Snorkel, and the turret wagon at work.] It's always a reminder of how unpredictable and dangerous these situations can be, especially with structures that lack adequate fire-resistant materials. As always, our firefighters put themselves in harm's way to protect the community, and their bravery never goes unnoticed. Stay safe out there, everyone.
