Yesterday afternoon, the Burnham Fire Department received multiple calls about a fire breaking out in a three-story apartment building located at 14000 S. Torrence Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters noticed thick smoke billowing from the first floor of the structure. Recognizing the severity of the situation, they promptly escalated the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm. This call for mutual aid brought support from several neighboring departments, including units from Calumet City, Dolton, South Holland, and even Munster, Indiana.
Thanks to the swift response and coordinated efforts of all involved, the flames were successfully contained in a relatively short amount of time. Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident, which is always the top priority in situations like these.
After the fire was under control, Tim Olk, who arrived slightly later, managed to capture some compelling images of both the aftermath and the emergency vehicles that had been dispatched to the scene. His photos offer a vivid glimpse into the intensity of the operation and the dedication of the firefighters involved.
One of the first engines on the scene was Burnham Engine 2014, a 2007 HME Ahrens Fox, which played a crucial role in the initial firefighting efforts. Calumet City Truck 309 also arrived quickly and was stationed in the 'A' Sector, providing essential support with its hand lines. South Holland Engine 665, built by Smeal on an HME chassis, was prepared to lend additional assistance if needed.
Burnham Engine 2016, a 1996 HME SFO Luverne, was strategically positioned just down the street from the burning building, ready to respond as necessary. Meanwhile, the Munster Indiana Fire Department, part of MABAS Division 24, had their Truck 2221, an American LaFrance/LTI tower ladder, on standby to assist as well.
For those working tirelessly on the scene, the Third District Fire Chief's Association canteen unit was present to provide much-needed refreshments and support during the rehabilitation phase. These efforts underscore the importance of teamwork not only among firefighters but also with auxiliary services that ensure responders stay hydrated and energized throughout demanding operations.
In moments like these, it becomes clear how vital collaboration between different agencies can be in ensuring public safety. The quick actions taken by everyone involved helped mitigate potential damage and kept people safe—a testament to the professionalism and preparedness of our local fire departments.
