Chicago Fire Department moves to digital radios – more

Hey everyone, I just got this update from Dave Weaver about the Chicago FD's UHF radio zone channel names and assignments. These are the main zones currently in use by the Chicago Fire Department and EMS teams. Their radios have more than 20 zones programmed, and some channels might have different numbering depending on the zone. I’ll break it down for you: --- **Zone (FD):** - **(1) FIREMAIN:** This is the primary channel used by Fire Suppression and Rescue (FS&R) companies in the northern part of the city for communication with the OEMC (Office of Emergency Management and Communications). - **(2) FIREENGL:** Similar to FIREMAIN but for FS&R companies in the southern part of the city. - **(3) ADMIN:** A secondary channel used for communication between FS&R companies and ambulances. It also serves as an alternative Fireground channel if there’s a MAYDAY situation. - **(4) FIREGRND:** The main channel for FS&R teams to communicate at the scene of an incident. - **(5) FIRE CMD:** Used by Chiefs to coordinate efforts at large-scale incidents like extra alarms. - **(6) EMS CMD:** The EMS tactical channel during major EMS Plan incidents. - **(7) EMS OPS:** Under the EMS Command Chief, this channel is used during high-rise fires. It can also serve as an alternative EMS tactical channel in large incidents. - **(8) OPS 8:** Can be assigned as a tactical channel for search and rescue or support at large incidents. Also acts as an alternate Fireground channel if a MAYDAY is called at a nearby incident. - **(9) OPS 9:** Another tactical channel, primarily for FS&R communication at a second incident if FIREGRND is already in use elsewhere. - **(10) OPS 10:** For Chiefs to coordinate at a second major incident if FIRE CMD is occupied. - **(11) CTA FIRE:** Used for communication within the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) tunnels and subways. - **(12) UMETRO 3:** An interoperable channel for city/county agency coordination. It can act as a backup for CTA to FS&R communication during subway incidents. - **(13) CW FIRE:** An alternate dispatch channel during busy times. - **(14) LAKEFRNT:** For communication with Chicago Park District lifeguards. - **(15) FIREENGL:** Similar to FIREMAIN but for the southern jurisdiction. - **(16) FIREMAIN:** Again, similar to FIREMAIN but for the northern jurisdiction. --- **Zone (EMS):** - **(1) EMS MAIN:** Used by EMS companies in the northern part of the city for communication with the OEMC. - **(2) EMS ENGL:** Same as EMS MAIN but for the southern part. - **(3) ADMIN:** Like in Zone (FD), this is for communication between FS&R and ambulances. It also serves as an alternate Fireground channel if needed. - **(4) FIREGRND:** For FS&R communication at the scene of an incident. - **(5) FIRE CMD:** Used by Chiefs for coordination at large incidents. - **(6) EMS CMD:** The EMS tactical channel during major EMS Plan incidents. - **(7) EMS OPS:** For high-rise fires under EMS Command Chief guidance. Can also be an alternate EMS tactical channel in large incidents. - **(8) OPS 8:** Tactical channel for search and rescue or support. Acts as an alternate Fireground channel at a second incident. - **(9) OPS 9:** Similar to OPS 8 but for FS&R communication at a second incident if FIREGRND is occupied. - **(10) OPS 10:** For Chiefs to coordinate at a second major incident if FIRE CMD is in use. - **(11) CTA FIRE:** Communication within the CTA tunnels/subways. - **(12) CITY W5:** A special events channel used by Chicago Police and monitored by OEMC. - **(13) CW FIRE:** Alternate dispatch channel during high-volume periods. - **(14) LAKEFRNT:** For communication with Chicago Park District lifeguards. - **(15) FIRE ENGL:** Similar to FIREMAIN but for the southern jurisdiction. - **(16) FIRE MAIN:** Again, similar to FIREMAIN but for the northern jurisdiction. --- These channels are crucial for coordinating emergency responses across different jurisdictions and situations.
