Chicago Fire Department moves to digital radios – more

Hey everyone, This message is coming directly from Dave Weaver, and it’s all about the UHF radio channel assignments used by the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). As you know, these channels are crucial for coordinating operations across the city, especially during major incidents. Here’s what he shared: --- **Chicago FD UHF Radio Zone Channel Names/Assignments** The Chicago FD and EMS crews operate on multiple channels, each serving a specific purpose. Their radios typically have over 20 zones, many of which carry duplicates but with varying numbers. The two primary zones in use are Zone (FD), for Fire Department operations, and Zone (EMS), for EMS-related activities. ### **Zone (FD):** - **(1) FIREMAIN**: This is the main channel for FS&R (Fire Suppression & Rescue) teams in the northern part of the city to communicate with the OEMC (Office of Emergency Management and Communications). - **(2) FIREENGL**: Similar to FIREMAIN but used by FS&R teams in the southern jurisdiction. - **(3) ADMIN**: A backup channel for FS&R teams and ambulances to communicate. It serves as an alternate Fireground channel in case of a MAYDAY situation. - **(4) FIREGRND**: This is the go-to channel for FS&R teams to talk to each other at the scene of an incident. - **(5) FIRE CMD**: Chiefs use this channel to coordinate efforts during large-scale incidents like extra alarms. - **(6) EMS CMD**: This is the EMS tactical channel during EMS Plan incidents. - **(7) EMS OPS**: Used by EMS companies under the EMS Command Chief’s direction, especially during high-rise fires. Can also serve as an alternative EMS tactical channel at big events. - **(8) OPS 8**: The Incident Commander can assign this as a tactical channel for search-and-rescue or support operations. It also functions as an alternate Fireground channel if needed. - **(9) OPS 9**: Another tactical channel that can be assigned for similar purposes as OPS 8 but focuses on FS&R communications if FIREGRND is already in use nearby. - **(10) OPS 10**: This channel is for Chiefs to manage activities at a second large-scale incident if the first one is already using FIRE CMD. - **(11) CTA FIRE**: Used by department members working in the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) tunnels. - **(12) UMETRO 3**: An interoperable channel for communication with other city/county agencies. With the Incident Commander's permission, it can act as a backup for CTA to FS&R communication during subway incidents. - **(13) CW FIRE**: An alternate dispatch channel used by the OEMC during high-traffic times. - **(14) LAKEFRNT**: For communicating with lifeguards at Chicago’s beaches. - **(15) FIREENGL**: Similar to FIREMAIN but used in the southern jurisdiction. - **(16) FIREMAIN**: Same as (1), but for the northern jurisdiction. ### **Zone (EMS):** - **(1) EMS MAIN**: Main EMS channel for northern jurisdictions to connect with the OEMC. - **(2) EMS ENGL**: Similar to EMS MAIN but for southern jurisdictions. - **(3) ADMIN**: Backup channel for FS&R and ambulance communication. Acts as an alternate Fireground channel in emergencies. - **(4) FIREGRND**: FS&R communications at the scene of an incident. - **(5) FIRE CMD**: Chiefs use this for large-scale incident coordination. - **(6) EMS CMD**: Tactical channel during EMS Plan incidents. - **(7) EMS OPS**: Used by EMS companies under the EMS Command Chief’s direction, particularly during high-rise fires. Can also serve as an alternative EMS tactical channel at large-scale events. - **(8) OPS 8**: Tactical channel for search-and-rescue or support operations. Also serves as an alternate Fireground channel if necessary. - **(9) OPS 9**: Similar to OPS 8 but focused on FS&R communications at a second incident if FIREGRND is occupied elsewhere. - **(10) OPS 10**: For Chiefs to manage activities at a second large-scale incident if FIRE CMD is already in use. - **(11) CTA FIRE**: Used by department members working in the CTA tunnels. - **(12) CITY W5**: Monitored by the Chicago Police Department for special events and coordinated through the OEMC. - **(13) CW FIRE**: Alternate dispatch channel during high-traffic times. - **(14) LAKEFRNT**: Communication with lifeguards at Chicago’s beaches. - **(15) FIREENGL**: Same as FIREMAIN but for the southern jurisdiction. - **(16) FIREMAIN**: Same as (1) but for the northern jurisdiction. --- These channels ensure smooth coordination across the city, whether it’s a small fire or a major disaster. If anyone has questions or suggestions about how we can improve this system, feel free to reach out! Stay safe out there. —Dave
