Ship Technology Top Ten News

On January 27th and October 5th, the high-speed passenger ro-ro ships "Wiesby" and "Gertland," constructed by GSI for the Swedish company Götland Shipping, were successfully delivered. As a key national scientific and technological project, the development of these "double high" vessels, featuring cutting-edge international technology, marked a significant milestone in China's shipbuilding industry by filling a long-standing gap in the construction of high-speed passenger ro-ro ships. This achievement represented another major breakthrough for Chinese shipbuilding. In late May, the world’s first 7S8OMC large-bore diesel engine, manufactured by Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd., passed technical evaluation and acceptance. With a cylinder diameter of 800 mm and a maximum continuous power output of 25,480 kW, it stands as the most powerful marine engine produced in China to date. On August 13th, Dalian New Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. completed the construction of the 230,000-ton FPSO vessel “Balanek Natuna” for Konok Phillips Petroleum Corporation of the United States. This was the largest FPSO ship built in China, representing a significant step forward in the country’s marine engineering capabilities. On April 28th, China’s shipbuilding industry introduced its first series of preferred ship types—double-side bulk carriers—developed jointly by Chinese shipbuilders and researchers. These vessels are designed with original intellectual property rights and meet the latest international technical standards. The initial models included a 54,000-ton handysize bulk carrier, a 75,000-ton Panamax bulk carrier, a 100,000-ton super Panamax bulk carrier, and a 175,000-ton Capesize bulk carrier. On May 25th, the first China Shipbuilding Engineering Society Science and Technology Award was presented in Beijing. This award is the highest honor for civil science and technology within the Chinese shipbuilding industry. Nine projects won awards, including the "Huaihai L" drilling platform developed by the China Shipbuilding Industry Research Institute and the main structure of the central station developed by Shengli Oilfield Shengli Engineering Design Consulting Co., Ltd., both of which received the top prize. On June 21st, the “New Walrus,” a 12,000-cubic-meter self-propelled suction dredger designed by the Shanghai Waterway Bureau and the China Shipbuilding Industry Institute, was officially certified. This vessel set a precedent by converting a cargo ship into a large suction dredger, addressing a critical gap in China’s domestic dredging capabilities. The Qiongzhou Strait Train Ferry Development Project, part of the "Tenth Five-Year" National Major Technical Equipment Program, was completed and accepted in October. This multi-functional ferry, capable of carrying trains, cars, and passengers simultaneously, marked the first such vessel built in China, filling a historical gap in the shipbuilding industry. The project achieved numerous original technical innovations. In three years, four key research topics under the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" national scientific and technological projects were successfully completed and accepted on October 27th and 29th. These projects addressed over 30 critical technical challenges in the design and construction of large LNG ships, 5618TEU container ships, FPSOs, and heavy-duty ro-ro ships, significantly enhancing China’s ability to build advanced vessels and improving its global competitiveness. On September 10th, Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. ranked 153rd in the Chinese Enterprise Informationization 500 list. The company has actively promoted computer-aided design and management systems, achieving widespread use of CAD/CAM and computer-integrated manufacturing systems, along with an efficient office automation system. On May 6th, Shanhaiguan Shipyard completed the world’s first ocean windmill installation vessel, "Mayflower·Faith," for the British company Mayflower Energy. This project demonstrated China’s growing expertise in specialized offshore construction vessels.
