After the completion of the impressive Tianjin 1 million-ton-per-year ethylene project, the industrial water demand will be fully met through seawater desalination. This major facility, located in the Binhai New Area of Tianjin, is a key national project that includes related infrastructure such as oil refining and thermal power upgrades. With a total investment of 20.1 billion yuan, the project was scheduled to start operations in 2008.
The ethylene plant alone is expected to consume approximately 82,000 tons of water per day, totaling nearly 30 million tons annually. To support sustainable development, Tianjin Petrochemical Company partnered with Singapore-based Xinfa Group, a leader in large-scale seawater desalination, tap water, and wastewater treatment projects. The collaboration led to the construction of a seawater desalination plant in the Dagang Marine Petrochemical Park, with a daily capacity of 150,000 tons to supply water for industrial needs in the area.
The new desalination plant, named Tianjin Dagang Xinquan Desalination Co., Ltd., spans 180 acres. The first phase of the project will produce 100,000 tons of fresh water per day, with an investment of $90 million, and is set to be completed by July 2006. The second phase will increase capacity to 50,000 tons per day, expected to be finished by 2008.
Once operational, the cost of desalinated seawater will be around 4 yuan per ton, which is more economical than local industrial water rates. The seawater used for desalination comes from the cooling water of the Dagang Power Plant, transported via a dedicated pipeline along Zinqi Highway. The treated water will primarily serve enterprises within the Dagang Marine Petrochemical Park and the upcoming large ethylene project, ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for the region’s growing industrial demands.
