On January 27th and October 5th, GSI delivered two high-speed passenger ro-ro ships, the "Wiesby" and "Gertland," to the Swedish company Götland Shipping. As a national key scientific and technological project, these "double high" vessels represent a major breakthrough in China's shipbuilding industry, filling a long-standing gap in the construction of high-speed passenger ro-ro ships. This achievement marks a significant step forward in China's maritime technology and global competitiveness.
At the end of May, Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. successfully completed the technical appraisal of the world's first 7S8OMC large-bore diesel engine. With a cylinder diameter of 800 mm and a maximum continuous power of 25,480 kW, this engine is the most powerful marine engine produced in China, showcasing the country’s growing capabilities in advanced engine design.
On August 13th, Dalian New Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. delivered the "Balanek Natuna," a 230,000-ton FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) vessel for Konok Phillips Petroleum Corporation in the U.S. This was the largest FPSO ship built in China at that time, highlighting the country's progress in building complex offshore structures and expanding its presence in the global marine engineering sector.
On April 28th, China's shipbuilding industry introduced a series of preferred ship types to the international market. These include double-side bulk carriers developed jointly by Chinese shipbuilders and researchers, featuring original intellectual property and meeting the latest international technical standards. The initial models launched were a 54,000-ton handysize bulk carrier, a 75,000-ton Panamax model, a 100,000-ton super Panamax bulk carrier, and a 175,000-ton Capesize bulk carrier.
On May 25th, the first China Shipbuilding Engineering Society Science and Technology Award was presented in Beijing. This award is the highest honor for civil science and technology in China's shipbuilding industry. A total of nine projects won awards, including the "Huaihai L" drilling platform and the central station main structure, both of which received the top prize for their innovative contributions.
On June 21st, the "New Walrus," a 12,000-cubic-meter self-propelled suction dredger designed by the Shanghai Waterway Bureau and the China Shipbuilding Industry Institute, was certified. This vessel marked a successful conversion from a cargo ship to a large suction dredger, filling a critical gap in China’s domestic dredging capabilities.
In October, the Qiongzhou Strait Train Ferry Development Project, part of the "Tenth Five-Year" National Major Technical Equipment initiative, was completed and accepted. This multi-functional ferry can carry trains, cars, and passengers simultaneously, marking a historic milestone in China's shipbuilding history. The project achieved numerous technological breakthroughs, many of which were original to China.
By October 27th and 29th, four key research topics under the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" national scientific and technological projects were successfully completed. These projects addressed over 30 key technical challenges in building large LNG ships, 5618TEU container ships, FPSOs, and heavy-duty ro-ro ships, significantly enhancing China's ability to design and construct high-tech vessels and boosting its international competitiveness.
On September 10th, Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. ranked 153rd in the Chinese Enterprise Informationization 500 list. The company has made great strides in computer-aided design and management, implementing extensive CAD/CAM applications and computer-integrated manufacturing systems, along with an efficient office automation system.
On May 6th, Shanhaiguan Shipyard delivered the world's first ocean windmill installation ship, the "Mayflower·Faith," to the British company Mayflower Energy, further demonstrating China's growing role in renewable energy infrastructure and offshore engineering.
