In China, Guangdong Jiangmen Ganhua (Group) Co., Ltd. stands as a pioneer in the comprehensive utilization of sugarcane. As the first company in the country to implement such an integrated approach, it has successfully turned almost all the waste generated from its own sugarcane processing into valuable resources. Moreover, it has extended this practice by processing waste from other regions within the Pearl River Delta, as well as from Guangxi and Hainan, effectively contributing to a circular economy model.
However, the journey hasn't been without challenges. For many years, Ganhua faced significant environmental issues due to outdated equipment and processes. The company was discharging large amounts of pollutants, including papermaking wastewater, boiler dust, and others, which affected local water and air quality. To address these problems and meet stringent environmental regulations, Ganhua has invested over 240 million yuan in pollution control and process upgrades since 1998.
A key part of this investment was the construction of a wastewater treatment center, costing 30 million yuan. This facility covers 16,000 square meters and has a daily capacity of 25,000 tons. It not only treats middle-stage wastewater but also handles biochemical plant yeast and alcohol wastewater. Additionally, the company spent over 1.6 million yuan to upgrade the air flotation white water recovery system in its paper mill. The treated white water is partially reused for paper machine spray and dilution, significantly reducing water consumption.
One of the most challenging aspects of Ganhua's operations was the high-pollution red liquor produced during the manufacturing process. After extensive research and planning, the company adopted a clean production strategy, introducing innovative methods for red liquor treatment. In 2000, Ganhua invested 190 million yuan to build a new production line that uses red liquor as a raw material, following the process of extraction, concentration, evaporation, spray drying, and final product preparation. This led to the successful production of lignin salt, a product with strong market demand. With a utilization rate of up to 95%, the company now produces 30,000 tons of lignin sulphonate and 60,000 tons of water agents annually, generating more than 10 million yuan in annual net profit.
Not only did this innovation completely eliminate the issue of red liquor pollution, but it also became a new source of revenue for the group. Today, Ganhua Company not only fully utilizes all its own waste but also processes waste from sugarcane sugar production in surrounding areas, including Guangxi, Hainan, and Zhanjiang. Through continuous improvement and sustainable practices, Ganhua has become a leading example of how industrial waste can be transformed into economic value while protecting the environment.
