After the completion of the impressive Tianjin 1 million-ton-per-year ethylene project, the industrial water demand will be fully met through seawater desalination. The project, a key national initiative, is being developed by Tianjin Petrochemical Company in the Binhai New Area. It includes not only the ethylene plant but also supporting projects like oil refining and thermal power upgrades. With a total investment of 20.1 billion yuan, the project was originally scheduled to start operations in 2008.
Once operational, the ethylene complex is expected to consume approximately 82,000 tons of water per day, totaling nearly 30 million tons annually. To support sustainable development, the company has partnered with Singapore’s Xinfa Group, a leading firm in large-scale seawater desalination, tap water, and wastewater treatment. The collaboration involves building a desalination plant in the Dagang Marine Petrochemical Park, capable of processing 150,000 tons of seawater daily to meet the park's industrial needs.
The new facility, named Tianjin Dagang Xinquan Desalination Co., Ltd., spans 180 acres. The first phase of the project will produce 100,000 tons of fresh water per day, with an investment of $90 million, and is set to be completed by July 2006. The second phase, which will add another 50,000 tons per day, is planned for completion by 2008.
Notably, the cost of desalinated seawater is estimated at RMB 4 per ton, which is lower than other local industrial water prices. The source of the seawater is the cooling water from the Dagang Power Plant, which is transported via the Zinqi Highway to the desalination plant. Once treated, the water will primarily supply companies within the Dagang Marine Petrochemical Park, including the newly established ethylene project. This innovative approach ensures a reliable and sustainable water supply for one of China’s most significant industrial developments.
