Guangdong Jiangmen Ganhua (Group) Co., Ltd. stands as a pioneer in China for its comprehensive utilization of sugarcane, setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in the industry. Not only has the company managed to fully utilize all waste generated from its own sugarcane processing, but it also plays a crucial role in managing waste from other regions within the Pearl River Delta, as well as from Guangxi and Hainan. By transforming by-products like sugarcane bagasse and molasses into valuable resources, Ganhua has opened up new pathways for circular economy development.
However, the journey hasn't been without challenges. For many years, Ganhua faced significant environmental issues due to outdated equipment and processes, leading to the discharge of large amounts of pollutants such as papermaking wastewater and boiler dust, which affected local water and air quality. To address these concerns, the company made a strong commitment to pollution control. Since 1998, Ganhua has invested over 240 million yuan in upgrading its facilities and improving its production processes.
A key investment was the construction of a wastewater treatment center, costing 30 million yuan, covering 16,000 square meters with a daily capacity of 25,000 tons. This facility handles not only middle-stage wastewater but also biochemical plant yeast and alcohol wastewater, significantly reducing environmental impact. Additionally, the company spent over 1.6 million yuan to upgrade its air flotation white water recovery system in the papermaking workshop, allowing treated white water to be partially reused for paper machine spray net and dilution water.
One of the most challenging aspects of Ganhua’s operations was the high-pollution red liquor produced during the manufacturing process. To tackle this issue, the company adopted a clean production strategy, introducing advanced technologies for red liquor treatment. In 2000, Ganhua invested 190 million yuan to build a new production line that converts red liquor into lignin salt, using a process that includes extraction, concentration, evaporation, and spray drying. This innovation has led to a 95% utilization rate of red liquor, producing 30,000 tons of lignin sulphonate and 60,000 tons of water agents annually, generating over 10 million yuan in net profit. Not only did this solve the long-standing problem of red liquor pollution, but it also became a new source of revenue for the group.
Today, Ganhua has achieved full waste utilization, not only within its own operations but also in surrounding areas such as Guangxi, Hainan, and Zhanjiang. The company continues to lead by example, demonstrating how sustainable practices can drive both environmental protection and business growth.
