Of interest north of the border … Burlington Rescue Squad

Excerpts from the journal times.com:

The Burlington Rescue Squad is set to disband at the end of this year due to rising call volumes and a shrinking pool of volunteers. This decision will force the City of Burlington Fire Department to take over rescue services for local residents. Officials from the Town of Burlington are currently in discussions with the city about a potential contract for emergency medical services after December 31st. Both the town and the city have their own fire departments, but the city's department is planning to expand its staffing by adding three full-time and two part-time fire/EMS personnel. This will bring the total number of paid staff in the city’s fire department to five full-time and 12 part-time firefighters and EMS workers, along with one part-time administrative assistant. The department also continues to rely on volunteer firefighters.

It seems likely that the town will eventually contract with the city for rescue services, as it appears to be the most practical solution. Currently, around 20 members are registered with the rescue squad, and many of them may choose to join the city fire department or other local volunteer organizations. This transition could help maintain some level of continuity in emergency response within the area.

Founded in 1946, the volunteer rescue squad has been handling between 1,300 and 1,600 emergency calls each year in recent years. Originally established as a nonprofit organization by the Burlington Rotary Club, it remained under their oversight for many years. At its peak, the squad also provided service to parts of Dover, Kenosha County, and Walworth County.

The Rescue Squad’s Board of Directors recently concluded that continuing operations was no longer viable. In April, the squad and the city fire department had announced they were exploring a merger. The idea of focusing solely on the town was considered, but last week it was decided that this approach wasn’t feasible given current resources and demand.

Some of the rescue squad’s equipment will be transferred to both the city and town fire departments, while the remaining items will be donated to emergency services across the state that need assistance. This move aims to ensure that the squad’s assets are not wasted and can continue to serve the community in some capacity.
