Of interest north of the border … Burlington Rescue Squad

The Burlington Rescue Squad is set to disband at the end of this year due to rising emergency call volumes and a growing shortage of volunteers. This decision will leave the City of Burlington Fire Department responsible for providing rescue services to residents. Officials from the Town of Burlington are currently in discussions with the city about a potential contract for EMS services after December 31st. Both the town and the city have their own fire departments, but the city's department will now take on additional responsibilities.

In preparation for this shift, the city fire department plans to hire three more full-time and two part-time fire/EMS staff. This will bring the total number of paid personnel to five full-time and 12 part-time firefighters and EMS workers, along with one part-time administrative assistant. The department also continues to rely on volunteer firefighters.

It seems likely that the town will contract with the city for rescue services, as this appears to be the most practical solution. Currently, the rescue squad has around 20 members, and many of them may choose to join the city fire department or other local volunteer organizations.

Founded in 1946 by the Burlington Rotary Club, the volunteer rescue squad has been handling between 1,300 and 1,600 emergency calls each year in recent years. At its peak, it even provided coverage to parts of Dover, Kenosha County, and Walworth County. However, the board of directors recently concluded that continuing operations is no longer sustainable.

In April, the rescue squad and the city fire department announced they were exploring a merger. The squad had considered focusing solely on the town’s needs, but last week, it was determined that this approach was not feasible. As a result, the decision was made to dissolve the squad entirely.

Some of the rescue squad’s equipment will be transferred to the city and town fire departments, while the remaining items will be donated to emergency services across the state that are in need of support.
