Fatal crash in Milwaukee, WI – 10-24-19

Excerpts from Fox6now.com:

Three children were struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near 22nd Street and Center Street on Thursday evening, October 24, and one of them lost their life. The driver did not stop at the scene.

The hit-and-run accident occurred around 5:30 p.m., when a driver ran a red light. According to police, the crash involved a 10-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old girl, as well as two vehicles. Authorities are still unclear whether all three children were hit by both cars, but both vehicles fled the scene. Tragically, the 6-year-old girl died. The other two children—both related to the deceased girl—were seriously injured and are currently in the hospital.

The vehicle that caused the crash was described as a gray 2007–2009 Saturn Aura, with front-end damage and tinted windows. Police are urging anyone with information about the car or the incident to come forward.

Excerpts from an earlier article at jsonline.com:

For the next two months, the Milwaukee Police Department will be sharing the names, booking photos, and arrest details of individuals convicted of felony reckless driving and/or fleeing from officers. This new initiative, called “Keep MKE’s Streets Safe,” aims to raise awareness and hold offenders accountable by posting this information on social media platforms.

Many of those arrested for these offenses have long criminal records, and 32 people arrested this year have been previously charged with fleeing from police. The move comes in response to a recent crash that left three people injured during a police pursuit.

The incident followed a police chase after a stolen vehicle was linked to an armed robbery and home invasion. The driver had failed to pull over during a traffic stop, leading officers to pursue the vehicle. Although the pursuit was eventually called off, the suspect continued to drive recklessly before crashing into another car.

Currently, police may pursue vehicles involved in violent crimes, drug-related activities, or reckless driving. However, the department is re-evaluating its policies following several tragic incidents involving high-speed chases.

On August 1, Lequon McCoy, 19, was killed when a vehicle being chased by police reached speeds up to 80 mph and ran a red light, striking his Jeep Renegade at North 12th and West Locust streets.

Another deadly chase occurred on April 18, when 18-year-old Larenzo Jones was fatally injured during a pursuit linked to a shooting that also wounded two girls and a boy. Jones was in the suspect's vehicle.

In June 2018, Officer Charles Irvine Jr., 23, was killed and his partner injured during a pursuit on the city’s northwest side. The incident highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement during high-speed chases.
