China's plastics processing industry holds immense development potential, creating a vast opportunity for the press industry to grow rapidly. Injection molding machines, in particular, occupy nearly 50% of the plastics market, with about one-third of all plastic products manufactured using this technology. In the export sector, these machines account for approximately 60.4% of total exports, making them a significant force in global trade. Despite being among the fastest-growing presses in China and having a relatively small gap compared to industrialized nations, the overall technical level still lags behind developed countries. Domestic companies mainly produce low-end models, while high-end machines are dominated by foreign manufacturers.
In recent years, manufacturers in industrialized countries have continuously introduced advanced injection molding machines with improved functions. Meanwhile, many Chinese companies have relied on imitation for years, using outdated production and testing equipment. This has hindered the upgrading of domestic machines, leading to an oversupply of low-performance products and a shortage of high-tech alternatives. To bridge the gap, the key lies in increasing R&D investment and focusing on the development of high-precision, high-tech injection molding machines. Only through independent innovation can China catch up with global leaders.
Industry experts emphasize that simply importing technology is not enough—companies must absorb and redevelop it. Typically, imported technology is at least 10 years behind the latest foreign developments, so local firms need to reinvest in R&D. However, developing injection molding machines requires long-term commitment, often taking 5 to 10 years from concept to production. Many companies struggle due to technical challenges, lack of funding, and talent shortages. Yet, forward-thinking enterprises should not abandon innovation for short-term gains. Instead, they should focus on improving stability, efficiency, and energy consumption by adapting and upgrading imported technologies.
Fortunately, some major manufacturers in regions like the Yangtze River Delta have made progress. For example, Ningbo Haida has invested heavily in R&D, producing innovative models such as the direct-pressure injection machine and HDX series. Haitian developed China’s largest injection force machine for automotive parts, while Zhenxiong created specialized machines for optical discs and PET preforms. Haihang also introduced a super-energy-saving injection molding machine that uses only half the power of traditional models. These efforts show that some companies are moving toward the mid-market segment.
However, most Chinese injection molding machine companies remain at an early stage, with limited absorption and innovation capabilities. The market is flooded with generic, low-end models, leading to over-supply and homogenization. With rapid international advancements, new technologies and specialized machines are emerging. Features like computerization, automation, multifunctionality, and ease of maintenance are becoming essential. Specialized machines for precision equipment, CDs, magnetic materials, and thin-wall plastics are increasingly in demand. Currently, over 90% of large-scale, high-precision injection molding machines imported into China cannot be produced domestically.
To compete effectively, Chinese companies must adapt to market trends and accelerate product restructuring. They should enhance control, automation, and energy efficiency in standard horizontal machines while expanding toward modular and customizable systems. For instance, same-model machines could be equipped with multiple injection units to offer greater flexibility. At the same time, they should invest in large, special, reaction, and precision injection molding machines to meet the needs of advanced plastics like alloys and embedded components.
According to the 2004–2005 China Chemical Market Research annual report, demand for petrochemical machinery and presses remains strong. Much of the old equipment is being phased out, creating a huge need for high-tech alternatives. As the market becomes more segmented, the demand for high-tech injection molding machines is growing. To capture a share of this booming market, China must speed up its independent innovation and technological upgrades.
