Not long ago, the Chemspec European Exhibition took place in Geneva, Switzerland, drawing a large number of top fine chemical companies. The event highlighted the strong growth and vibrancy of the fine chemicals sector. Major players such as Lonza, Sigma-Aldrich Fine Chemicals (SAEC), SF-Chem, and Sumitomo Chemical Europe are optimistic about the future, expecting sales of fine chemicals to rise in 2006 and beyond.
Sumitomo has strategically located its fine chemical production primarily in Japan to avoid competition from lower-cost regions like China and India. Although many of its raw materials come from neighboring China, the company has chosen not to establish manufacturing facilities there, unlike some Western competitors. Meanwhile, Lonza reported continued growth in sales of fine chemical intermediates, with particular growth in areas like diketone derivatives. SAEC aims to boost its fine chemical sales by 10% in 2006 and is also working toward becoming one of the top 10 medical diagnostics manufacturers globally. The medical diagnostics industry is currently a high-growth sector, valued at around $30 billion worldwide, and SAEC plans to support diagnostic companies through customized formulations and direct supply chains.
This year’s Chemspec Europe featured over 400 exhibitors, with nearly half coming from China. The next exhibition is scheduled for Mexico City in Latin America during the second half of 2007, signaling the growing global reach of the fine chemicals industry. As more companies look to expand into emerging markets, the fine chemicals sector is set for continued innovation and expansion.
