At 11:03 am today, the massive liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport ship "Northwest Sea Eagle" arrived safely at Shenzhen LNG Dapeng receiving station terminal, carrying approximately 60,000 tons of LNG. This marks a historic moment as it is the first LNG-specific vessel to dock at a Chinese port, making Shenzhen the first in the country to have LNG handling capabilities. The arrival signals a new era for Shenzhen's energy infrastructure and strengthens its position as a key player in the region's energy market.
According to information obtained by reporters from the Shenzhen Maritime Safety Administration, the "Northwest Sea Eagle" transported LNG from Australia to the Dapeng receiving station in Guangdong. It is expected to remain in Shenzhen Port for eight days before proceeding with its cargo delivery. This voyage highlights the growing importance of LNG in China's energy strategy and the increasing reliance on international supply chains for clean energy.
The Dapeng Bay LNG project, which has now reached its final construction phase, is set to officially commence operations in June. With a total investment of 2.9 billion yuan, this project is not only China’s first LNG pilot initiative but also a crucial energy strategy project in South China. Once fully operational, it will significantly boost the region’s energy security and support sustainable development goals.
To ensure the safe docking and operation of the "Northwest Sea Eagle," the Shenzhen Maritime Organization developed a comprehensive supervision plan for its maiden voyage. During the ship’s entry, the Shenzhen Ship Traffic Management Center implemented strict traffic control measures around the LNG terminal. Unrelated vessels were prohibited from entering within a 1,500-meter radius of the LNG ship, ensuring a secure and orderly environment for the critical operation.
In addition, the Shenzhen Maritime Safety Administration recently introduced the "Shenzhen Port Ships LPG Safety Management Regulations (Trial)," making it the first region in China to establish specific guidelines for the bulk transportation of liquefied natural gas. These regulations aim to enhance safety protocols, improve emergency response mechanisms, and ensure long-term stability in the LNG supply chain.
The "Northwest Sea Eagle" is a large vessel, with a gross tonnage of 106,283, measuring 262.44 meters in length and 47.20 meters in width. It is registered under the United Kingdom flag and carried 126,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas on this journey from Australia to the Dapeng receiving station. As it successfully berthed at Dapeng Pier, it marked the official beginning of the natural gas era in Shenzhen, signaling a major step forward in the city's energy transformation.
