Washing, drying integration technology, standards into a "stumbling block" (1)

"Combining washing and drying, I clean my favorite clothes, eliminating the hassle of drying in my daily life. Life has never been easier, and I’m ready to enjoy it more than ever." This is a message from a home appliance brand introducing its dry-wash machine, an ad that highlights the convenience of modern technology. Since March 2005, the market for washing and drying machines—especially drum dryers—has seen fierce competition, particularly in high-end drying technologies. Haier launched its flagship model, the "Sunshine Beauty Washing Dryer," and announced its "Year of Drying Strategy." Soon after, Siemens, Electrolux, LG, and Samsung followed suit, all trying to capture a share of this growing market. However, the high price and ongoing technical disputes among manufacturers have made the marketing of these appliances less effective. In response, the national standard for domestic tumble dryers is currently under development and is expected to be introduced this year. The goal is to regulate the market and guide consumers toward informed choices. "Background: Washing and Drying Machines Are Not Always 'Appetizing'" Sichuan, known for its damp climate, especially in Chengdu, where winter is often rainy and cloudy, presents a real challenge when it comes to drying clothes. Clothes often remain wet and smelly, making them uncomfortable to wear and potentially causing skin irritation. Even when dried in the sun, they can get contaminated, posing health risks. A Siemens sales representative recommends washing and drying machines, saying, “As living standards rise, these appliances are becoming the next big thing in home appliances.” Despite their popularity abroad, the reporter found that washing and drying machines in Chengdu’s major stores do not have a strong reputation. Some users have complained about the inconvenience or inefficiency of these machines. "Evaluation: Standardization Will Bring Clarity to the Market" On one hand, there are issues with inconsistent performance, and on the other, major manufacturers are aggressively promoting their own technologies. For example, there are three main types of drying technology: natural air drying, heating drying, and condensation drying. According to Lu Jianguo, director of the laundry department at the China Household Electrical Appliances Institute, most dryers today use condensation drying. Ma, from Duckling Washing Machine Technology Division, explained that the drying process involves ventilation, heating, and dehumidification. Heating drying works by warming up the moisture left on clothes, while condensation drying adds an extra step where hot vapor is turned back into liquid. “Heating is better for cotton, while condensation reduces damage caused by hot air and results in fewer wrinkles,” he said. “Each drying method has its pros and cons, but without clear standards, some manufacturers exaggerate their claims and even attack each other,” Lu noted. “The introduction of national standards will help regulate the market and provide consumers with more reliable information.” “Regret: The Standard Only Defines Testing Methods” Lu also revealed that the new standard being drafted follows the IEC 61121 (2002-07) international testing method. It will define drying time, power consumption, water usage, drying efficiency, and the final dryness level of clothes. The standard is expected to take effect next year. “In simple terms, it will specify how much clothing can be dried at once under standard conditions. Different dryers must achieve a certain level of dryness using less energy, ensuring higher efficiency.” According to Lu, the standard focuses on key controversial indicators. One is drying time—some machines use a timer-based system, which requires manual adjustment and can lead to over-drying or damaged clothes. Another is drying uniformity. Traditional dryers use fixed temperatures, regardless of the fabric type, leading to uneven drying and potential fiber damage. The new standard aims to address these issues, ensuring fairer and more accurate performance evaluations.
