This just in from Oak Park: The Fire Department got a call today around 1:50 PM about a partial building collapse in the 200 block of Harrison Street. The affected area is between 201 and 211, right at the southwest corner where Harrison meets Lombard Avenue. It's usually a pretty busy part of town with all the shops around here.
Dan McInerney, who happens to be on the scene, sent over some photos and a detailed account of what happened. Here’s what he shared:
"The Oak Park firefighters arrived swiftly after receiving the report of the collapse. They brought out three fire engines, two ambulances, a command van, and even the specialized MABAS Division 11 Technical Rescue Vehicle. When they got there, they found a single-story, L-shaped commercial building that's roughly 150 feet wide and 100 feet deep. Unfortunately, the brick façade along nearly 100 feet of the Harrison Street side collapsed right onto the sidewalk. Thankfully, despite the chaos, no people were hurt in this typically bustling commercial area, though two cars parked nearby did sustain minor damage from the falling bricks. Interestingly, the eastern section of the building has been undergoing renovations for quite some time now. Firefighters immediately started searching through the debris along the sidewalk, just to make sure no one was trapped. For about an hour and a half, they worked to stabilize the building and secure the utilities before handing things over to the local building department."
I've also attached some images captured by Dan McInerney himself. These pictures really give you a sense of the extent of the damage.
