Oak Park building collapse 8-10-11

This just in from Oak Park: A partial building collapse occurred this afternoon in the 200 block of Harrison Street, near the intersection with Lombard Avenue. The affected area spans roughly 201-211 on the southwest corner. I'm Dan McInerney, and I’m here at the scene with some photos and details. When Oak Park firefighters arrived at around 1:50 PM, they found a single-story, L-shaped commercial structure that had partially collapsed. This building, which measures about 150 feet wide by 100 feet deep, had its brick façade along approximately 100 feet of Harrison Street give way, crashing onto the sidewalk below. Thankfully, despite the heavy foot traffic in this bustling commercial district, there were no reported injuries. However, two parked cars in front of the collapse suffered minor damage from falling debris. The eastern section of the building has been undergoing renovations for quite some time now. Firefighters immediately began searching through the rubble along the sidewalk for any potential victims, ensuring everyone’s safety. Over the next hour and a half, emergency crews worked diligently to stabilize the remaining structure and secure the utilities. Once their work was complete, the building was handed over to the local building department for further assessment. [Insert Photo 1: A view of the collapsed façade along Harrison Street.] As you can see from these images, the damage is extensive but thankfully contained. [Insert Photo 2: A closer look at the fallen bricks and debris.] Firefighters did an incredible job managing the situation quickly and efficiently. [Insert Photo 3: Emergency vehicles on the scene.] It's moments like these that highlight the importance of having trained professionals ready to respond at a moment’s notice. In the meantime, residents are advised to avoid the area while repairs are underway. Stay tuned for more details on the investigation into what caused this collapse.
