Yellow phosphorus tail gas purification and CO purification technology to eliminate pollution

In 2003, the Southwest Research Institute of Chemical Industry successfully developed a groundbreaking technology for the purification of carbon monoxide from yellow phosphorus tail gas. This innovation was implemented at the Sichuan Linchen Group's Yellow Phosphorus Plant, where a 50 m³/h facility was set up to process the tail gas. The system was launched in October 2004 and passed all tests with flying colors. After purification, the levels of harmful substances such as phosphides, sulfides, arsenides, and fluorides were found to be below 1×10⁻⁶ kg/m³, while the recovery rate of carbon monoxide exceeded 85%. Phosphorus is a crucial raw material in the chemical industry, and the tail gas generated during its production contains approximately 85% to 90% carbon monoxide — an essential component for carbonyl synthesis. However, this byproduct also includes various toxic elements like sulfur, phosphorus, arsenic, and fluorine. In China, many yellow phosphorus producers still resort to burning or venting the tail gas directly, leading to severe environmental pollution and the wastage of valuable carbon monoxide resources. According to statistics, China produces around 450,000 tons of yellow phosphorus annually, generating about 1.1 billion standard cubic meters of tail gas. With an average of 1.5 grams of phosphides and 20 grams of sulfides per cubic meter, this results in over 1,687.5 tons of phosphide and 22,000 tons of sulfide being released into the atmosphere each year. This not only causes serious environmental damage but also leads to the loss of 990 million standard cubic meters of carbon monoxide — a valuable resource that could otherwise be reused. Industry experts have praised the technology developed by the Southwest Research Institute of Chemical Industry, stating that it offers new technical support for China’s environmental protection sector and aligns well with the requirements of a circular economy. This innovation marks a significant step forward in both industrial sustainability and environmental conservation.
