During the fourth all-member meeting of the fourth national chlor-alkali equipment management technical cooperation group held in Chengdu in mid-September, industry leaders emphasized that innovation in both equipment management and technology was essential for sustainable development. They called for a stronger focus on upgrading equipment and promoting the application of new technologies, materials, processes, and systems.
The chlor-alkali industry is known for its high-risk environment—characterized by high temperature, high pressure, and flammable or explosive conditions. Over the years, companies like Zhejiang Juhua Co., Ltd. have accumulated valuable experience in equipment management and technological advancement. As the leading unit of the national equipment management technical cooperation group, Juhua Electrochemical Factory conducted a comprehensive review of these lessons learned. According to Fu Jianlin, head of the plant’s equipment department, there are five key areas to focus on when it comes to equipment management and technological innovation.
First, automation of older equipment is crucial. Traditional diaphragm caustic soda systems are often outdated, with low levels of automation and a higher risk of accidents. By applying advanced control technologies, such as reliable valves and controllers for turbine chlorine compressors, DCS control for hydrogen chloride synthesis furnaces, and PLC-based ignition systems, the safety and reliability of old equipment can be significantly improved.
Second, special attention must be given to heat exchangers used under harsh conditions. For example, some carbon steel heat exchangers in chlorine press systems may suffer severe corrosion if tube and shell materials come into contact. Proper selection of reliable manufacturers, optimized process design, and structural improvements can prevent this issue. Regular inspections during operation are also vital.
Third, effective management of key production lines is essential. As production scales grow, so does the complexity of equipment management. Prioritizing maintenance and ensuring spare parts availability for critical equipment becomes increasingly important.
Fourth, attention to detail is fundamental. The chlor-alkali production process is highly continuous and involves complex flows, making even small issues potentially disruptive. Establishing strict rules and preventive measures is necessary to maintain smooth operations.
Fifth, continuous equipment upgrades and technological transformations are needed, especially for aging systems. Embracing new equipment, materials, and technologies can enhance equipment stability and extend maintenance intervals. For instance, caustic soda units now aim for two or even three years between major overhauls.
In addition, many enterprises have adopted modern management techniques such as network planning, value engineering, and ABC management. They have also introduced innovations like expanded anodes, modified diaphragm cells, high-density bipolar ion membrane electrolysis, and advanced graphite furnaces. These advancements have significantly boosted the technical level of production facilities, improved operational reliability, and extended the lifespan of key equipment.
