Harbin Electric has made a groundbreaking achievement with the development of a 700 MW large-scale all-air-cooled turbine generator, which is not only the largest in single-unit capacity but also the biggest in structural size and thrust load. This remarkable project was independently designed, developed, and manufactured by Harbin Electric, and it has received high praise from industry experts. They consider the R&D technology to be at the world's leading edge, marking a new era for China in operating the world’s largest single-capacity all-air-cooled generator set. The cooling methods for large hydroelectric generators typically fall into three categories: full air cooling, semi-water cooling, and evaporative cooling. Among these, full air cooling uses air as the cooling medium, which requires no additional cost. It offers advantages such as a simple structure, easy installation, convenient maintenance, high reliability, and a low failure rate. However, this method is generally limited to hydro-generators with a single unit capacity below 400 MW. For units over 600 MW, it has long been considered technically challenging to implement full air cooling, making the production of a 700 MW all-air-cooled unit a global challenge. On the grand stage of the Three Gorges Project, Harbin Electric took on the challenge, breaking through previous technical limitations in air-cooling design. The company introduced innovative design concepts and developed a comprehensive ventilation design and calculation method. Through coordinated optimization and innovation in electromagnetic calculations, structure, ventilation, cooling systems, and insulation, Harbin Electric successfully designed and manufactured 700 MW all-air-cooled hydro-generators for both the Longtan Hydropower Station and the Three Gorges Right Bank Power Station. In May of this year, the first 700 MW all-air-cooled unit at Longtan Power Station was successfully connected to the grid. Later, Unit 26 of the Three Gorges Right Bank Power Station followed suit on July 10. Based on current operational performance, the 700 MW all-air-cooled hydro-generator produced by Harbin Electric has met the overall goal of proper total air volume, reasonable air distribution, uniform wind speed, and excellent cooling efficiency. This achievement represents a major milestone in the field of hydroelectric power generation.
