European and American petrochemical products will surely suppress the Asian market

Due to lower freight rates and relatively good demand for petrochemical products in Asia, petrochemical products from the United States, Europe and South Africa are entering the regional market. This extra supply from non-traditional sources is flooding into the Asian market and will surely put further downward pressure on the prices of petrochemical products in Asia.

“Our company has purchased polypropylene and polyethylene from the Mediterranean, Europe, South America and South Africa in recent weeks, because these products are lower than the Middle East products,” said an Indian plastic processor. Due to the low price of goods provided by these non-traditional supply sources and the expected large-scale production capacity in the Middle East to be put into operation, Asian petrochemical trading companies are expecting manufacturers to lower their prices.

The traditional import sources of Indian importers and end-users are Middle East, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia producers because of their close geographical location and low procurement costs. However, in recent weeks, imports of polyvinyl chloride from the United States have increased significantly. “U.S. cargo prices are at least US$50/t lower than imports from South Korea and Taiwan,” a trader said.

Because of the additional anti-dumping tax of US$45/t, buyers are reluctant to accept U.S. PVC goods, but the recent sharp drop in U.S. prices has attracted buyers. Market participants in China stated that they have noticed that a large amount of goods have recently come from non-traditional sources. "In February and March, there was a large amount of acetone cargo flowing from the United States and Europe to China," said traders and distributors. The operating rate of Asian acetone producers remained at a low of 60% to 80%, which also led to a large number of Western competitors exporting to Asia. At present, spot prices for Asian butadiene are between US$500 and US$530 per ton (cost plus freight, Northeast Asia), a decrease of US$50/ton from the previous month.

In addition, as a large amount of new capacity in the Middle East is expected to be put into production in April, excess product will pressure the spot price and the price of goods will be lower in April.
