Coal-based ethylene glycol pilot project passed national appraisal

On December 22, the reporter learned from related departments that on the 12th of this month, the National Energy Administration organized the relevant experts to chair the Hefei-based 300-ton coal-to-gas syngas production polymerization grade ethylene glycol pilot project results appraisal meeting in Beijing. Experts at the meeting believed that the successful research and development of this achievement has achieved an important breakthrough in the production of ethylene glycol from coal, with a number of key technical indicators ranking at the leading international level and raising the overall level of China's coal chemical industry.

The project was jointly developed by China Wuhuan Engineering Co., Ltd., Hubei Huashuo Technology Co., Ltd. and Hebi BMW Group. Complete new technology for the production of polymerization grade ethylene glycol using coal-based syngas with completely independent intellectual property rights, including five Chinese invention patents and reactor know-how obtained, esterification regeneration technology, distillation and refining technology, and proprietary Analytical testing and other four proprietary technologies. Through the inspection of the operation of a polymerization grade ethylene glycol pilot plant with an annual production of 300 tons of coal-based syngas, the major technical indicators have achieved further breakthroughs on the existing domestic basis, and a number of key technical indicators have reached the international advanced level. The quality has been tested by the National Petroleum and Petrochemical Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (Guangdong), and it has met the requirements of the "National Standard for Ethylene Glycol for Industrial Use" and the "Standard Specification for Polyester Grade Ethylene Glycol" in the United States.

“Glycol is an important organic chemical raw material, mainly used for the production of polyester fiber, antifreeze, etc. At present, 70% of China’s demand depends on imports.” Yan Changqun, chief engineer of BMW (Group) Industrial Co., Ltd., accepted the report. During the interview, he said, “The new technology results in the production of ethylene glycol from coal as raw materials is not only less expensive than the traditional petroleum route to produce ethylene glycol, but also more environmentally friendly, higher yield, and lower cost than other similar processes. Relieving China's oil shortage, reducing the dependence of the polyester industry on imported ethylene glycol, and ensuring energy security are of great significance."

According to reports, the annual production of 300 tons of coal to syngas production polymerization grade ethylene glycol pilot project began construction in 2010, began chemical feed in March this year, in May the main process successfully opened up, in July the entire process to achieve through. At present, the 50,000-ton coal-to-ethylene glycol industrial demonstration project for the scaled-up production project of the pilot project has started construction in February this year, and the 200,000-ton coal-to-ethylene glycol production scale project is proceeding in an orderly manner.
