Yellow phosphorus tail gas purification and CO purification technology to eliminate pollution

In 2003, the Southwest Research Institute of Chemical Industry successfully developed a groundbreaking technology for the purification of carbon monoxide from yellow phosphorus tail gas. This innovative system was later implemented at the 50 m³/h yellow phosphorus plant of Sichuan Linchen Group. The project was launched in October 2004 and achieved great success during testing. After purification, the levels of harmful substances such as phosphides, sulfides, arsenides, and fluorides in the tail gas were found to be below 1×10⁻⁶ kg/m³, while the recovery rate of carbon monoxide exceeded 85%, demonstrating the efficiency and environmental benefits of this technology. Phosphorus is a key raw material in the chemical industry, and the by-product gas generated during its production contains approximately 85% to 90% carbon monoxide—essential for carbonyl synthesis. However, it also includes toxic elements like sulfur, phosphorus, arsenic, and fluorine. Currently, many Chinese yellow phosphorus producers still dispose of their tail gases by burning them off through flares or venting them directly into the atmosphere. This practice not only pollutes the surrounding air and water resources but also leads to the wasteful loss of valuable carbon monoxide. According to data, China produces around 450,000 tons of yellow phosphorus annually, generating about 1.1 billion standard cubic meters of tail gas each year. With an average of 1.5 grams of phosphides and 20 grams of sulfides per cubic meter, this results in over 1,687.5 tons of phosphide and 22,000 tons of sulfide being released into the atmosphere annually. This contributes significantly to environmental pollution and wastes approximately 990 million standard cubic meters of carbon monoxide, which could otherwise be reused. Industry experts have praised the technology developed by the Southwest Research Institute, noting that it provides critical technical support for China's environmental protection sector. It not only helps reduce pollution but also aligns with the principles of a circular economy, promoting sustainable resource utilization and green industrial development.
