New (used) heavy rescue with crane for Newport FPD

Bill Friedrich recently shared that the Newport Fire Protection District in Lake County has acquired a 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury walk-in heavy rescue truck, equipped with a mid-ship mounted 8-ton, 33-foot National Crane. The unit was previously owned by the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County, Maryland. While the apparatus hasn't yet arrived in Illinois, it's expected to make the move soon. Lutherville’s fleet is traditionally painted in white with gold stripes and a black bottom band. In 2008, they replaced this unit with a new Pierce Velocity heavy rescue, also a walk-around model, featuring a 10-ton National Crane. The Lutherville Mack, which operated as Squad 303 for many years, was known for its robust crane capabilities, often used in extrication operations. A photo from Larry Shapiro shows the unit in action, highlighting its strength in stabilizing or lifting vehicles during emergencies. The original Mack served as a reliable asset for the department before being phased out in favor of more modern equipment. A second image captures the same unit in its final days, showcasing its design and functionality. Meanwhile, the replacement Pierce Velocity, now serving as Squad 303, continues to provide similar heavy rescue capabilities, but with updated technology and a more powerful crane. This transition reflects the ongoing evolution of fire apparatus across departments, ensuring better performance and safety for both firefighters and the public.
