Bill Friedrich shared that the Newport Fire Protection District in Lake County has acquired a 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury walk-in heavy rescue truck, equipped with a mid-ship mounted 8-ton, 33-foot National Crane. The unit was purchased from the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County, Maryland. Although the vehicle hasn’t yet arrived in Illinois, it is expected to be transferred soon. The Lutherville apparatus is traditionally painted white with gold stripes and a black lower band. In 2008, the company replaced this unit with a Pierce Velocity heavy rescue, also a walk-around model, featuring a 10-ton National Crane.
The Mack MR/Saulsbury served as Squad 303 for many years before its retirement. It was known for its reliability and capability in emergency extrication operations. Photos from Larry Shapiro show the unit in action, demonstrating how the crane could stabilize or lift vehicles during critical incidents. The original unit had a long and respected service history with Lutherville, making its transfer an interesting development for fire departments in Illinois.
The replacement unit, the Pierce Velocity, is now the primary heavy rescue for the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company. It continues to serve with a more modern 10-ton National Crane, offering enhanced lifting capabilities. This transition reflects the ongoing evolution of firefighting equipment and the importance of staying up-to-date with technology.
