Flyability’s 2020 Year in Review—7 Million Euros Raised, Mission to Chernobyl, Data Localization, 21,000+ Webinar Registrants, and More

Although 2020 was a challenging year for many, Flyability remained active and focused on innovation. We’re proud of what we achieved last year, despite the global circumstances.

Before looking back at our progress in 2020, we’d like to extend our best wishes to all our clients, partners, prospects, and supporters around the world for a successful 2021.

7 Million Euros Raised + First U.S. Office Opened

2020 started with a major milestone—our first U.S. office opened in Denver, Colorado. This expansion allowed us to better serve our growing customer base across America. As the year came to a close, we were thrilled to announce the completion of our Series C funding round, securing 7 million Euros ($8.6 million USD) in new capital.

This investment is helping us accelerate our mission to develop drones for indoor use and create advanced software that supports drone-based inspections. With the U.S. office now fully operational, we're more equipped than ever to support our international clients and continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with drone technology.

Software for Data Localization

At the end of 2020, we launched Inspector 3.0—a powerful tool that enables inspectors to localize data on a 3D map after an inspection flight. This feature significantly improves accuracy by eliminating guesswork when identifying defects found during an inspection.

Traditionally, inspectors rely on multiple data points to estimate the location of a defect. Inspector 3.0 provides precise spatial information, allowing maintenance teams to pinpoint exactly where work is needed. This not only saves time but also increases safety and efficiency.

Webinars, Webinars, Webinars

With the pandemic forcing many events online, webinars became a central part of learning and networking. At Flyability, we adapted quickly and hosted a series of virtual events throughout 2020.

We converted our annual User Conference into a webinar series and continued offering content for the rest of the year. In total, we held 21 webinars, with over 21,000 registrants and nearly 4,000 attendees.

Some of the most popular sessions included:

  • How to Mitigate Intrinsic Safety
  • Indoor 3D Modeling Use Cases: Photogrammetry in Action
  • How to Build and Scale a Drone Program at Your Company
  • Learn How API and ASME Experts Are Working to Expand Drone Inspection Applications

All webinar recordings are available for viewing at any time. See the full list now (scroll down to the “past webinars” section).

Case Studies Demonstrate Safety and Savings

Throughout 2020, we published several case studies showcasing how our drone technology helps companies improve safety and reduce costs. Here are two standout examples:

Drone Reduces Time Needed for Scrubber Inspection by 98%, Saving 470 Hours of Work

  • Application: Power Generation
  • Client: Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)

The TVA used the Elios 2 to inspect a scrubber at one of its power plants, reducing inspection time by 98% and saving 470 hours of manual labor. This not only improved efficiency but also enhanced worker safety.

$2 Million Saved Using Elios 2 for Oil Tanker Cargo Inspection

  • Application: Maritime
  • Client: Marine Inspection Services, Ltd

Marine Inspection Services, Ltd helped an oil tanker company save $2 million by using the Elios 2 for cargo tank inspections. This project highlighted the cost-effectiveness and precision of drone-based inspections in high-risk environments.

Supporting Research and Exploration

Last year, we released two videos highlighting groundbreaking missions that pushed the limits of exploration. One of these involved the Elios drone being used in some of the deepest ice caves in Greenland, while another took the Elios 2 to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

Flyability’s Elios Used to Explore Some of the Deepest Ice Caves in the World

This mission helped researchers study water movement beneath the ice, providing valuable insights into climate change. Read more about it here.

Elios 2 Tested at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

This mission provided critical visual data from Reactor Five, which had been sealed since the 1986 disaster. The footage offered scientists a rare glimpse into one of the most dangerous areas on Earth. Read more about it here.

New In-Depth Guides

In 2020, we continued our effort to provide educational resources to our community. We published a series of in-depth guides covering topics such as non-destructive testing, indoor drones, and boiler inspections.

Some of the guides we released include:

  • NDT (Non-Destructive Testing): What It Is, Common Methods & Industries, and How Drones Can Help
  • Indoor Drones: What They Are, What They Do, and the Different Types on the Market
  • Boiler Inspections: What They Are, How They Are Conducted, and How Drones Can Help

Over the course of the year, we published a total of eleven guides. You can find them all here.
