Flyability’s 2020 Year in Review—7 Million Euros Raised, Mission to Chernobyl, Data Localization, 21,000+ Webinar Registrants, and More

Although 2020 was a challenging year for many, Flyability remained incredibly active and focused on innovation. We're proud of what we accomplished and excited to share the highlights with you.

Before we take a look back at our achievements in 2020, we want to extend our warmest wishes to all our clients, partners, prospects, and supporters around the world for a successful 2021.

7 Million Euros Raised + First U.S. Office Opened

2020 started with an exciting milestone: we opened our first U.S. office in Denver, Colorado. This move allowed us to better serve our growing customer base across America. By the end of the year, we also celebrated a major financial achievement—successfully closing our Series C funding round, which brought in 7 million Euros ($8.6 million USD).

This new funding is being used to further expand our work in developing drones for indoor environments and to enhance our software solutions that support drone-based inspections. Our U.S. team is playing a key role in driving these efforts forward.

Software for Data Localization

Toward the end of 2020, we launched Inspector 3.0, a powerful tool that enables inspectors to localize data on a 3D map created after each inspection flight. This feature significantly improves accuracy and efficiency in identifying defects.

Traditionally, inspectors have had to rely on multiple data points to estimate the location of a defect. With Inspector 3.0, this process becomes much more precise. The software allows users to pinpoint flaws directly on a sparse point cloud, making it easier for maintenance teams to locate and address issues quickly.

Webinars, Webinars, Webinars

With the pandemic forcing many events online, webinars became a central part of how people learned and connected. At Flyability, we embraced this shift and turned our annual User Conference into a series of virtual sessions.

We hosted 21 webinars throughout 2020, attracting over 21,000 registrants and nearly 4,000 attendees. Some of the most popular topics included:

  • How to Mitigate Intrinsic Safety
  • Indoor 3D Modeling Use Cases: Photogrammetry in Action
  • How to Build and Scale a Drone Program at Your Company
  • How API and ASME Experts Are Expanding Drone Inspection Applications

All webinar recordings are available for viewing anytime—check out the full list here.

Case Studies Highlight Safety and Efficiency

In 2020, we published several case studies showcasing how our drone technology helps companies improve safety and reduce costs. Here are two standout examples:

Drone Reduces Time Needed for Scrubber Inspection by 98%, Saving 470 Hours of Work

  • Application: Power Generation
  • Client: Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)

The TVA tested the Elios 2 for scrubber inspections and found that it not only improved safety but also cut inspection time by 98%. Read the full case study here.

$2 Million Saved Using Elios 2 for Oil Tanker Cargo Inspection

  • Application: Maritime
  • Client: Marine Inspection Services, Ltd

Marine Inspection Services helped an oil tanker company save $2 million using the Elios 2 for cargo tank inspections. Learn more about this success story here.

Supporting Research and Exploration

Last year, we released two videos highlighting groundbreaking missions that pushed the limits of exploration.

Flyability’s Elios Used to Explore Some of the Deepest Ice Caves in the World

This video showcases a mission to Greenland where researchers used the Elios drone to study water movement beneath the ice, helping to understand climate change impacts. Read more here.

Elios 2 Tested at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

We partnered with scientists to explore Reactor Five at Chernobyl, one of the most dangerous places on Earth. This mission provided critical visual data from a site that had been inaccessible since 1986. Discover more here.

New In-Depth Guides

Building on our previous efforts, we continued publishing detailed guides on topics important to our community in 2020. These include:

  • NDT: What It Is, Common Methods & Industries, and How Drones Can Help
  • Indoor Drones: What They Are, What They Do, and the Different Types on the Market
  • Boiler Inspections: What They Are, How They Are Conducted, and How Drones Can Help

Over 11 guides were published last year—view them all here.
