Bosch Launches Next-Generation SMP480 Atmospheric Pressure Sensor

Bosch SMP480 Atmospheric Pressure Sensor This new product is very compact and only takes up a quarter of the space of the previous generation. It can be installed in the electronic control unit more easily than before. This is Bosch's automotive supplier in Stuttgart, which for the first time released SMP pressure sensors that transmit pressure and temperature via a 12-bit digital interface, rather than providing analog measurement signals. This barometer has a pressure signal tolerance of less than 1.0 kPa over its entire lifetime - the highest accuracy on the market today. The SMP480 is a 10-pin pre-formed SMD package that is RoHS compliant and has been produced in large quantities.

Atmospheric pressure sensors are key components of diesel engine and gasoline engine management systems and are designed to accurately measure current ambient pressure in low drift conditions. Air pressure is related to altitude and weather conditions. The engine management system uses sensor measurement data to ensure that the air and fuel mix achieve the best mix regardless of whether the car is on a coastal road or a hillside road. Constantly balancing the air-fuel mixing ratio can reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and other pollutants while reducing fuel consumption.

The core of the SMP480 is its sensing element. This sensing element is composed of a single crystal silicon film, which is fabricated using a high-grade porous silicon film process and sealed with a reference vacuum. Four strain gauges are implanted into the bridge circuit film. Pressure-induced changes in film curvature are measured, and even a few thousandths of a millimeter change into an electrical signal. Signal processing and AD conversion are performed by the ASIC, and the ASIC proximity sensing element is enclosed within the housing.

Since Bosch was put into production in 1995, it has produced more than 1.6 billion MEMS sensors. The product line includes pressure sensors, acceleration sensors, yaw rate sensors, flow sensors, torque sensors and microphone sensors that are widely used in automotive and consumer electronics.
