Some Chicago firefighters object to hiring initiative

The job posting clearly outlines several groups that receive preference, including those who have completed fire or police training, relatives of those who died while on duty, veterans, and CPS graduates.

While many see the CPS preference as a way to encourage students to stay in school and pursue careers in public service, some firefighters feel it's unfair. Tom Ryan, president of the firefighter union, expressed concerns that the policy could be seen as discriminatory, especially toward students from private schools.

"Our members believe that being a taxpayer and a citizen should be enough," Ryan said. "All children living in Chicago should be treated equally, regardless of where they go to school."

Mayor Emanuel has repeatedly promoted the CPS preference as a way to motivate students to graduate and prepare for future careers. A spokesperson for the mayor, Kelley Quinn, stated that the city ensures at least 20% of those referred for positions with CPS consideration are CPS graduates.

However, David Quintavalle, a member of the union’s board, took to Facebook to express his frustration. He wrote that many union members feel the policy is unjust, especially since some have chosen to send their children to private schools for personal or religious reasons.

Quintavalle warned that if the union doesn’t take legal action, members may take matters into their own hands. “It’s not enough that our members live in the city and pay taxes that support the CPS system,” he said. “Now you must send your child to a CPS school just to get a preference in the firefighter exam. That’s discrimination.”

Ryan emphasized that the union hasn’t ruled out litigation but remains open to negotiation. He noted that there’s still time before the December exam and that the city could change its stance.

This debate highlights a broader conversation about fairness, equity, and how cities can best support local communities while ensuring equal opportunities for all residents.
