China Automotive Engine Market Survey Report
**Overview of Industry Development**
Most vehicles today are powered by reciprocating piston internal combustion engines, which can be fueled by gasoline or light diesel. These engines are essential for transportation and require a power source that is lightweight, efficient, reliable, and durable. Gasoline engines offer high power per unit of displacement, are lighter in weight, easier to start, and produce less vibration and noise, making them the preferred choice for most passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. On the other hand, diesel engines are more fuel-efficient and have longer maintenance intervals, which makes them ideal for heavy-duty trucks and some medium-sized vehicles.
The use of diesel engines has been growing steadily due to their efficiency and economic benefits. From 2000 to 2004, the share of the automotive engine industry in the country's GDP increased annually, reflecting its growing importance in the national economy. However, in 2005, the industry's growth slowed down, and its economic position slightly declined. Despite this, it remained higher than the levels seen between 2000 and 2001. By 2006, the industry began to recover and showed signs of renewed momentum.
Over the past seven years, the overall economic performance of the automotive engine industry has improved significantly. The comprehensive economic efficiency index rose from 97.57 in 2000 to 228.31 in 2006, indicating a substantial increase in productivity and profitability. This improvement highlights the positive trends in the industry's development.
**China’s Automotive Engine Production and Sales Analysis**
Automotive starters are key components in vehicle electrical systems. In recent years, China's auto market has experienced rapid growth. In 2007, total car sales reached 8.791 million units, and by 2010, this number is expected to rise to 12.63 million. This growth presents significant opportunities for the automotive starter market.
In 2007, large-scale enterprises in China produced and sold over 16 million units of automotive starters and more than 10 million units of generators. The industry generated revenue exceeding 10 billion yuan, with profits nearly reaching 1 billion yuan. There are currently over 600 manufacturers producing starters, generators, and related parts in China, with about 300 having full assembly capabilities.
As competition intensifies, the market has become more segmented. Domestic starters and generators now cover over 99% of the domestic market, including passenger cars, mini-vehicles, light trucks, commercial vehicles, construction machinery, ships, and agricultural equipment. Foreign-owned companies have also expanded their market presence and are becoming major suppliers in the automotive sector.
With the current stable market structure, the industry has largely utilized its production capacity. It is expected that a new wave of large-scale investments will soon follow. From 2000 to 2006, the production and sales ratio of the automotive engine industry consistently exceeded the industry standard of 96%, indicating a balanced and efficient operation.
**Industry Operating Characteristics**
In 2006, the overall performance of the engine industry remained stable. According to statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics, enterprises above designated size in the automotive engine industry achieved a total value of 73.701 billion yuan, representing a 15.13% year-on-year increase. Industrial output value reached 806.4153 trillion yuan, up 33.94% compared to the previous year, and main business income was 75,692,722 million yuan, an increase of 29.13%.
These figures indicate that the industry is on a positive growth trajectory, with stable company sizes, increased fixed asset investment, controlled production scale, and improved production efficiency. Over the period from 2000 to 2006, the market size and growth rate of the automotive engine industry are illustrated in the following charts.
**Development Trends of Chinese Vehicle Engines**
1. **Trend in Gasoline Engines**
The gasoline engine market is closely tied to the growth of the passenger car sector. It is estimated that by 2010, the domestic car market will reach 5 million units, with mini-buses remaining around 900,000 units. This suggests a strong potential for growth in the gasoline engine market.
2. **Trend in Large and Medium-Sized Diesel Engines**
Future demand for large and medium-sized diesel engines is expected to focus on lower displacement, higher compression ratios, and greater power output. Current large diesel engines can achieve a power output of 25 kW/L, and this is expected to increase to 30 kW/L within the next 3–5 years.
3. **Trend in Light Diesel Engines**
With increasing urban and rural economic development, the replacement of agricultural vehicles with light trucks is expected to drive demand for light diesel engines. The market for these engines is likely to see rapid growth. Additionally, stricter emission and fuel consumption regulations in China will boost the market share of mid-to-high-end light diesel engines.
While dieselization is already widespread among light trucks, the future may see diesel engines adopted in more passenger cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, dieselization of sedans is unlikely to grow significantly in the next five years. As environmental and energy-saving policies continue to shape the market, larger-displacement passenger cars may face restrictions, while smaller, more efficient engines will dominate.
