On May 6, 2020, Northbrook firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from a house at 4040 Timberlane Drive, located in an unincorporated area of Cook County. The address is near the far southwest corner of Northbrook’s jurisdiction, close to the borders of Glenview, Wheeling, and Prospect Heights. A Cook County Sheriff’s Department officer arrived first and reported flames visible from the roof. The only hydrant on this several-block-long street is at the entrance on Sanders Road, which led to the dispatch of Prospect Heights Fire Department’s Tanker 9.
Northbrook Engine 10 was the first unit to arrive and laid a 5-inch hose line from the hydrant to the structure. Upon arrival, crews found an advanced attic fire with heavy smoke. The alarm was upgraded to a working fire, prompting additional units from Glenview, Wheeling, and all Northbrook fire companies to respond, along with Prospect Heights Tanker 9.
The fire was initially attacked using tank water until a reliable water supply could be established. Multiple lines were used to bring the fire under control. Northbrook Tower 12 ventilated the roof from their platform. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the incident.
Photos from the scene show thick smoke billowing from the house, firefighters entering the building with hose lines, and a firefighter wearing a medical mask at the scene. Additional images are available in a gallery, though the links are currently not functional. A video of the event is also embedded, though it appears to be empty or missing.
This response highlights the coordination between multiple departments and the importance of quick action in such emergencies. Despite the challenges posed by the location and limited resources, the firefighters managed to contain the blaze effectively. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polyethylene high-density (PEHD) is a thermoplastic polymer produced from the monomer ethylene. HDPE is commonly recycled, and has the number "2" as its resin identification code.It is sometimes called "alkathene" or "polythene" when used for HDPE pipes. With a high strength-to-density ratio, HDPE is used in the production of plastic bottles, corrosion-resistant piping, geomembranes and plastic lumber.
