Of interest … Mack Bulldog history

Dan McInerney came across an article detailing the rich history of the Mack Bulldog, and here are some highlights from trucks.com:

The iconic bulldog that has become synonymous with Mack Trucks is one of the most recognizable logos in automotive history. While the RCA Victor dog Nipper may be more famous, the bulldog on Mack vehicles has carved out its own legendary status over the decades.

Now nearly 100 years old, this canine hood ornament is featured on almost every Mack truck model. The bulldog, known as "Mack the Bulldog," has evolved through various styles, including tiny helmets, construction gear, firefighter outfits, and even superhero-inspired capes. It's a symbol of strength, reliability, and tradition.

The bulldog's origins can be traced back to World War I, specifically to the Mack AC truck. Introduced in 1916, these trucks were rugged and durable, much like the English bulldog. British soldiers began calling them "Bulldog Mack" due to their tenacity and the shape of the front hood. The name stuck and became part of the brand's identity.

However, it wasn’t until 1921 that the bulldog appeared on a Mack truck—not as a hood ornament yet, but as an emblem on the side of the vehicle. The design showed a fierce English bulldog tearing up a book that read “hauling costs,” highlighting the company’s confidence in its product.

In 1932, Alfred F. Masury, then chief engineer at Mack, created the first physical bulldog hood ornament after being sidelined by a medical issue. He carved the figure himself, and it was soon placed on the front of the Mack AB, a lighter version of the AC truck. This marked the beginning of the bulldog as a permanent feature on Mack vehicles.

Over the years, the design of the bulldog has changed. In 1979, Mack simplified the design by shortening the ears and tail to reduce the chances of it snagging on gloves or jewelry when the hood was opened. As truck designs advanced, the function of the bulldog also evolved—from a radiator cap ornament to a practical handle used for accessing the engine and performing maintenance.

Today, the bulldog remains a functional and symbolic feature on all Mack trucks. According to Doug Maney, curator of Mack’s historical museum, “On conventional models with tilt hoods, the Bulldog becomes the handle for opening the hood. On cab-over-engine models, it serves as a handle for stabilizing when washing the windshield or accessing components like wipers or coolant.”

This small but mighty mascot continues to represent the legacy, craftsmanship, and innovation of Mack Trucks, proving that sometimes the smallest details can carry the biggest meaning.
