A visitor to Chicago … Houston Fire Boat

From the Port of Houston Authority: **World’s Most Advanced Fireboat Headed to Houston** HOUSTON — A two-week journey across four Great Lakes and the Mississippi River will bring the first of three high-performance fireboats to the Port of Houston. This marks a major upgrade for the Port Authority’s firefighting team, which will now operate one of the most advanced fireboat fleets in the world. “Given that we are the nation’s busiest port in terms of foreign tonnage and home to one of the largest petrochemical complexes, our firefighting team plays a crucial role in protecting this vital national asset,” said Port Authority Executive Director Len Waterworth. “These new fireboats will enhance their ability to save lives and protect property along the 25-mile-long Houston Ship Channel.” The five-member crew includes three members from the Port of Houston Fire Department. They will navigate the fireboat through Lake Ontario and Lake Erie to Detroit, then across Lake Huron and Lake Michigan to Chicago. After a stop in Lockport, Illinois, the vessel will continue down the Illinois River to St. Louis, Missouri, before heading down the Mississippi River with stops in Cape Girardeau, Memphis, Greenville, and Baton Rouge. It will then make a final stop in Galveston before arriving in Houston on June 1, 2013. The journey is being led by Senior Captain Glenn Hood, a 14-year veteran of the fire department, and Engine Operators Robert Lacour and Vic Vasquez, each with 10 years of experience. All crew members are certified in structural, marine, HazMat, and EMT operations, and all pilots hold U.S. Coast Guard licenses. The Firestorm 70 is a state-of-the-art vessel designed for speed, maneuverability, and long-range operations. With quad diesel engines capable of reaching 45 knots, it is significantly faster than the current fleet, which maxes out at 14–16 knots. The boat can stop quickly and change direction within three boat lengths, making it ideal for emergency response in tight spaces. Inside, the Firestorm 70 functions as both a command center and a mobile station, featuring sleeping quarters, medical facilities, and advanced firefighting systems. Four pumps can deliver up to 17,000 gallons per minute at 130 PSI, more than triple the capacity of the previous boats. It also has a roof-mounted Stang monitor that can spray water up to 450 feet. Funded largely by federal grants, the new vessels are replacing aging boats commissioned in 1973 and 1983. The project took over 20,000 hours of work by MetalCraft Marine’s team, led by Project Manager Jay Milner and Design Manager Ryan Hunter. “We are honored to have been chosen by the Port of Houston Authority,” said Michael Allen, General Manager of MetalCraft Marine. “This boat represents the pinnacle of our design and engineering, and we hope it meets and exceeds the expectations of the Houston Fire Department.” MetalCraft Marine, established in 1987, is a leader in custom-built high-performance boats for the U.S. Coast Guard, Navy, and other government agencies.
