Vintage Chicago 5-11 Alarm fire, 4-26-62

Here's a message from Eric Haak:

These are some photos taken on Thursday, April 26, 1962. The fire was a 5-11 alarm at 2710 S. Throop Street. The building belonged to the National Plywood Company and was located along the future route of the Stevenson Expressway. During the early 1960s, there were several large fires in buildings that were scheduled for demolition to make way for the Dan Ryan and Stevenson Expressways. While I'm not certain if this fire was caused by arson, it occurred just before the expressway construction began. It's also interesting to note that this location was just a block south of where Engine 28’s station would be built a year or so later. The time recorded was 1:36 p.m.

These images give a glimpse into a moment in Chicago's history, when the city was rapidly changing. The fire at 2710 S. Throop St. is a reminder of how urban development often comes with its share of challenges. It's fascinating to think about how the area looked before the expressway was built and how it transformed over the years. These photos, part of Eric Haak's collection, offer a rare look at a past that's now largely forgotten. They’re a valuable piece of local history, preserving a moment that might otherwise have been lost to time.
