The United States announced on Tuesday a $40 million investment to develop direct brain recordings that have become the fastest growing branch of neuroscience. The two research centers jointly conducted research on brain-implantation memory disorders, one at the University of Pennsylvania and the other at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Their goal is to solve the problems caused by traumatic brain injury. The most destructive symptoms are the dullness of memory and reasoning. Scientists have discovered that through preliminary research they can obtain some type of memory deep in the brain by directly recording stimuli. Unlike brain imaging, direct brain recording allows scientists to understand the brain's internal information in real time, and their study is for patients with epilepsy or those with Parkinson's disease who are willing to participate.
This technology has provided a clear picture about the function of the neural circuit and is expected to propose new therapies to solve depression and anxiety as well as cognitive disorders. But experts also worry about the side effects of direct tampering with memory. "These readings have very important clinical application value, and the results will help us understand the basic issues of brain function, and at the same time guide what to do in this situation." Surgeon Thomas Jefferson said.
