Tinghan University has developed a sensor that can detect limp disease before the disease develops

According to statistics, more than 90% of sheep farmers in the UK report that their sheep are suffering from the disease. Lame disease is a common disease in the flock. If it is improperly prevented or treated, it will cause great losses to the farmers. There are many reasons for the occurrence of the disease. The more common ones are traumatic, viral or caused by malnutrition. Whenever the human eye can see that the sheep apparently has symptoms of claudication, the infection may have spread to other sheep in the flock.

Although the disease often occurs, the earlier the treatment, the easier it is to recover. For this reason, the University of Nottingham developed a sensor that can detect these symptoms before the naked eye can see that the sheep has contracted the disease.

The University of Nottingham developed this sensor together with Intel and agricultural software developer FarmWizard, using accelerometers and gyroscopes to collect data on animal behavior, movement and gait. This data is processed using a custom algorithm. If the herding behavior of the herd is detected, and the early signs of the disease, such as the difference in the number of exercise steps and the weekdays, are detected, they will be transmitted to the sheep-raising people through wireless transmission.

One of the novelties of this technology is that it uses edge processing and does not need to send all the data to the cloud. It can be done on the device. And it has an advantage in terms of battery life.
