SLM metal 3D printer that automatically removes defective layers

On July 24, 2019, Antarctic bears learned from foreign media that researchers at Politecnico di Milano have developed a new selective laser melting (SLM) system that removes defective layers during print jobs. The technology is currently being patented.

PENELOPE system

Known as PENELOPE, this prototype 3D printer combines SLM with a removal system to provide a new solution for the entire production chain. According to the paper by Professor Bianca Maria Colosimo and Professor Marco Grasso of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano: "3D printing still needs to overcome some technical limitations. One of the main challenges in research and development in this field is the need to improve the stability of the printing system, repeatable Sex and volume."

“There are several possible sources of error and various types of defects – internal porosity, residual stress, geometric deformation, discontinuous microstructures, etc. – products that may be produced during processing, not only negatively affecting the final quality and performance, but It also includes production time and cost. The purpose of this paper is to develop an additive manufacturing system that ensures a successful production process."

The PENELOPE system is said to be the first SLM device with defect removal, including a surface grinding wheel and a cart mounted on a linear axis opposite the Y-axis. The wheel components have an average grain size of 120 μm, a maximum speed of 4,000 rpm, a maximum feed of 30 mm / s, and a depth of cut of 10-20 μm.

In situ infrared (IR) video imaging is used to monitor the plume formed by material evaporation and ambient gas heating. In addition, the technology features front/back exposure images, 20 micron/pixel capacity, and a reconfigurable lighting system that is installed in the printer's build room.

Identify and remove defects using an integrated sensing and monitoring system and start printing again for defect-free printing. The researchers tested the PENELOPE system, which effectively removes defective layers from the additive manufacturing process.
