Researchers invent cheap solar cells

Scientists have developed a new production method that can reduce the cost of solar cells. A team at the University of Liverpool discovered bath salts during the search for materials that replace toxic elements in solar cells. The study has been published in the journal Nature and will be announced at the ESOF conference in Copenhagen.

More than 90% of the components in solar cells are silicon, and about 7% are made of a material called cadmium telluride. Cadmium telluride batteries are thinner than silicon and these are popular because they are also lighter and cheaper, although toxic. A large part of the cost of manufacturing cadmium telluride batteries is to protect employees from the threat of toxins and safely dispose of contaminated waste. Newly discovered materials are cheaper and non-toxic magnesium chloride. Magnesium chloride is completely safe. It is usually used to make tofu and bath salts. It can also be extracted from seawater, so the price of cadmium chloride is very cheap. And helium is one of the rarest elements on earth, so there will not be enough weight to produce solar cells. The development of solar energy will only be a matter of time, compete with fossil fuels and eventually replace them.
